Getting in and around Honiara

Honiara Airport

Getting to the Solomon Islands by car could be tricky, so your best bet for getting in is by plane. The Solomon Islands airport - Henderson - is located just seven miles from the capital, Honiara. There are regular weekly flights from Brisbane, Australia as well as from Vanuatu, Fiji and other local islands. You can also get to the Solomon Islands by sea. Some cruise liners will make stops at Honiara. There is also a boat that travels to the Solomon Islands' western province from Bougainville in Papua New Guinea.

Solomon Islands Transport

Getting around Solomon Islands is surprisingly easy and island hopping is a must during your stay. Travelling from island to island by air is the most common method. Commuter planes operated by Solomon Airlines fly at very low altitudes, allowing passengers incredible views of the area. It's also possible to catch boat rides from one island to the next but the timing can be somewhat unpredictable.

Solomon Islands Car Hire

Solomon Islands car hire is only available in the capital city of Honiara and can be quite expensive. You can also find car hire directly at the airport. As an alternative to care hire, taxis and minibus are recommended because they are affordable and reliable.

Things to do in the Solomon Islands

Once you set foot on the Solomon Islands, it's hard to deny the beauty of the place. Visitors will find a ton of things to do in the Solomon Islands that focus on the natural environment. Hiking, diving, and fishing are just a few pastimes you'll find on these tiny islands.

  • Fishing. The local waters at the Solomon Islands are highly populated with fish, making them a great place to go fishing. The Point Cruz Yacht Club is just one place to find fishing tours.
