You can also take a ferry to Coromandel town from Auckland. The ferry ride is about two hours in travel time. It is also possible to fly to Coromandel via the Coromandel airport from major cities and airports in New Zealand.

Things to do in Coromandel

Coromandel is known for its natural beauty. The rivers, lakes, and beaches serve as inspirations for artists as well as tourists, bringing an eclectic, bohemian vibe to the area culture. It is just that which makes visitors want to stay forever underneath one of the obscure waterfalls or hang out in one of the beach front hot springs.

  • Coromandel Township. The small town of Coromandel is well known for its artist community, gold mining industry, and historic architecture. The city centre is a must see to experience the culture of the area.
  • Hot Water Beach. Hot Water Beach has the best of both worlds. Visitors get amazing beach views along with the soothing comfort of hot springs, which bubble up through the sand two hours before and two hours after low tide.
  • Mercury Bay. Mercury Bay offers some of the best beach swimming in the area. Crystal blue water and white sand beaches go on for miles at Mercury Bay.
  • Coromandel Forest Park. Coromandel Forest Park includes the vast majority of the forested area that the Coromandel Forest Peninsula is famous for. Hikes and walks through Coromandel Forest Park are very popular pastimes for area visitors.
  • Karangahake Gorge. A hike through the impressive Karangahake Gorge is an exploration through history and nature. This tremendous gorge, produced by the Ohinemuri River, was once the site of gold mines and old railway lines.
  • Rapaura Watergardens. The Rapaura Watergardens are a must-see on your Coromandel agenda. There are over 14 sparkling ponds and a beautiful waterfall.
  • Cathedral Cove. Cathedral Cove is one of the most popular spots in Coromandel that boasts steep cliffs and beach front beauty that is unparalleled in the area.

    Day trips in and around Coromandel

  • Thames. Thames is a nearby town and was once the centre of the mining industry. Today it's a great tourist destination with museums, historic buildings, and guided tours.
  • Whitianga. Whitianga is the ultimate spot to spend the day. During the summer, it's a hub for fishing and water sports. The rest of the time, there's a marina and a fabulous shopping centre to keep you busy.
  • Tairua. Tairua is an important stop when touring the peninsula and a launching point for many fishing and diving tours. A great place to stay a night or two during your trip.
