Getting in and around Marrakech

Marrakech Airport

When flying to Marrakech, travellers will fly in to the local international airport, Marrakech-Menara International Airport. Marrakech-Menara is located about fifteen minutes outside of the city. Several Moroccan-based airlines, such as Ryanair and Royal Air Morocco, offer affordable flights from major European and African cities. Many flights will land in Casablanca where you can then take a 45 minute flight to Marrakech. However, it is more economical to take the line 19 bus to Marrakech.

When you arrive in Marrakech, you can take a petit taxi to your accommodation unless your hotel has been able to arrange a taxi to pick you up. However, be sure to agree on a price with your driver or ask them to use the meter.

Marrakech Transport

The best way to get around Marrakech is on foot. However, there are other alternatives. Taxis and buses in Marrakech are reliable and relatively affordable. But if you're looking for a more whimsical mode of transportation, try a caleche, or a small horse-drawn carriage. As with taxis, it's best to agree on a price with the driver before you begin your journey.

Things to do in Marrakech

There is never a dull moment in Marrakech and the people of this vibrant city never sit still either. The humming energy is sure to keep you on the move, whether you're going sight-seeing or shopping in Marrakech.

  • Djemma el Fna. The Djemma el Fna is a must when travelling in Marrakech. The town square is filled with dancers, musicians, and performers. You can buy tasty Moroccan treats and treasures and enjoy the culture of Morocco.
  • The Souks. The souks is the market in Marrakech that's usually right by where the Djemma el Fna would take place. You can buy anything here from food to house wares to clothing to numerous other treasures. Come prepared to bargain to ensure you get a good deal.
  • Koutoubia Mosque. The Koutoubia Mosque is located near the town square and you should be able to see the minaret from town. At night, the mosque is beautifully illuminated and is more or less the symbol of Marrakech.
  • Majorelle Gardens. Majorelle Gardens is a little more expensive than other attractions in the city but it's well worth the visit. See a number of plants, flowers, and cacti from all over the world. The Museum of Muslim Art is also located inside the Majorelle Gardens.
  • El Bahia Palace. El Bahia Palace is a 19th century palace that has been fairly well preserved. It is extremely ornate and beautiful and a relatively affordable attraction.

    Day trips in and around Marrakech

  • Visit a hammam. A hammam is a Moraccan spa where guests are pampered, scrubbed, and massaged. There are two types of hammams: those for tourists and those that the locals go to. Ask your hotel as to which hammams are best.
  • Saadian Tombs. The Saadian Tombs are one of the few sites of their kind that have not been destroyed. The tomb is beautifully decorated in the traditional Moroccan way.
